Suresh Raina earned the title “Mr. IPL” from fans over his IPL years. As a result, it came as a surprise to his supporters when he went unsold at the IPL 2022 auction. None of the ten clubs, including his former team Chennai Super Kings called out his name at the mega auction last month. There was a lot of anticipation on social media that Raina might replace Jason Roy at the Gujarat Titans, but that didn’t happen.
There is, however, some good news for Raina supporters. The former India and CSK southpaw will appear in the IPL 2022, but not on the field. According to media sources, Raina has been hired by Star Sports for their Hindi commentary team. He will be commentating alongside former India head coach Ravi Shastri.
Ravi Shasthri Also To Be Part Of The Commentary Team
According to reports, one of the two new teams approached Shastri for a coaching position prior to the IPL. However, it appears that the plans did not come to fruition. Ravi Shashtri will return to the commentary booth after a seven-year coaching tenure with Team India.
However, this will be a new position for him, as he has largely worked on the game in English throughout his post-cricketing career. Shastri is learning Hindi from an expert via Zoom. He’s also been practising his commentary ahead of the season.
“You are all aware that Raina will not be participating in the IPL this year, but we wanted to associate him with the league in some way. He has a big fan base, and there’s a reason he’s regarded as Mr IPL,” an IPL insider told Dainik Jagran. “Shastri was a member of the Star Sports English commentary team. However, he did not commentate after the Champions Trophy final in 2017 because he became India’s head coach.”
Suresh Raina’s IPL Days
Suresh Raina was inextricably linked with the Chennai Super Kings and his captain, MS Dhoni. Their strong bond earned him the moniker ‘Chinna Thala.’ Raina was crucial to Chennai Super Kings’ success. At No. 3, he displayed a darting left-hand style of play. Consequently, CSK had the option of attacking at will while still having a lot of firepower down the line.
He was one of four players that the franchise retained for the 2011 season. CSK re-signed him again prior to the 2014 season. Raina’s influence can be seen in the fact that he is currently the highest run-scorer in IPL history (4985 runs). Raina also has a very effective right-arm off-spin.
The 10-team Indian Premier League 2022 will kick off on March 26. All of the league stage games will take place at four different sites across Maharashtra.
