Kannur Lokesh Rahul is an Indian cricketer. He is the present vice-captain of the India national cricket team in all formats. He plays with Karnataka in domestic cricket. KL Rahul is the current captain of Lucknow Super Giants within the Indian Premier League. He’s a right-handed batter and a frequent wicket-keeper.

KL Rahul played his international debut in 2014 and scored his first test century in his second match. He was the primary Indian to attain a century on his International debut and, therefore, the third Indian to reach a century altogether three formats of international cricket.

Personal Life

KL Rahul was born on 18 April 1992 in Bangalore. His father’s name is KN Lokesh, and his mother’s name is Rajeshwari. His father, Lokesh, is a native of Kannur, Magadi taluk. Furthermore, he is a professor and a former director at the National Institute of Technology Karnataka in Mangalore. Rahul’s mother, Rajeshwari, is a professor at Mangalore University. Lokesh, a big fan of the cricketer Sunil Gavaskar, wanted to call his son after Gavaskar’s name but mistook Rohan Gavaskar’s name as Rahul. 

Rahul grew up in Mangalore, completing his high school at NITK English Medium School and graduation at St. Aloysius College. He started cricket training at the age of 10 and in two years began playing matches for both Bangalore United Cricket Club and his club in Mangalore. Moreover, at age 18, he moved to Bangalore to Jain University and further pursued his cricket career.

Domestic Career

KL Rahul made his first-class debut for Karnataka in the 2010–11 season. Furthermore, in the same season, he represented his country at the 2010 ICC U-19 Cricket World Cup, scoring a total of 143 runs within the competition. 

Rahul scored 185 in 233 balls for the first innings playing for the South Zone and 130 in 152 balls in the second. As a result, he received the Player of the Match and selected the Indian Test squad for the Australian tour.

Returning home after the Test series, Rahul became Karnataka’s first triple-century scorer, scoring 337 against Uttar Pradesh. He went on to score 188 in the 2014–15 Ranji Trophy final against Tamil Nadu and finished the season with an average of 93.11 in the nine matches that he played.

Rahul made his Indian Premier League debut for Royal Challengers Bangalore as a wicket-keeper batsman during the 2013 season. Before the 2014 IPL, he joined the Sunrisers Hyderabad for INR 1 crore before returning to RCB before the 2016 IPL.

In the 2016 IPL with Royal Challengers Bangalore, Rahul was the 11th highest run-scorer and third for RCB, with 397 runs from 14 matches.

On 19 December 2019, Rahul became captain of the Kings XI Punjab for the 2020 IPL, after former captain Ravichandran Ashwin went to Delhi Capitals.

In the Match against Royal Challengers Bangalore in September 2020, he scored an impressive 132* off just 69 balls. KL Rahul became the captain of the Punjab Kings for the 2021 IPL season. Rahul scored 91 in their first fixture against Rajasthan Royals. He scored a match-winning 60 in 52 balls against Mumbai Indians and 91 (57) against Royal Challengers Bangalore. KL Rahul won Man of the Match in both games. He joined Lucknow Super Giants as their captain for Rs.17 Crore making him the highest-paid cricketer in the IPL alongside Virat Kohli.

International Career

Rahul played his first Test in the 2014 Boxing Day Test match at the MCG. Moreover, he replaced Rohit Sharma and presented his test cap by MS Dhoni. He came at number six and made three runs in the first innings. Furthermore, in the second innings, he came in at number 3 and made just one run. But he still retained his place for the upcoming Test at Sydney, where he opened the innings with Murali Vijay and made 110 runs, his first-ever international century.

KL Rahul joined the 15-man squad for the Indian tour of Bangladesh in June 2015. He withdrew because of dengue. Rahul returned to the squad for the first Test of the Sri Lanka tour after Murali Vijay left due to his injury. KL Rahul scored his second test century and won the Man of the Match award. 

Rahul joined the squad to tour Zimbabwe in 2016 and made his ODI debut against Zimbabwe at Harare Sports Club. Furthermore, he scored an unbeaten 100 runs in 115 on his debut. As a result, he became the first-ever Indian cricketer to score a hundred on the ODI debut.


KL Rahul, irrespective of the controversy around him, is an outstanding player overall. Every single Indian fan counts KL Rahul as one of the openers for the main team. Rahul is good under pressure and is a hard-hitter when in form.
