Wanindu Hasaranga is a professional Sri Lankan cricketer who has represented his country in all three formats of the game. In July 2017, he made his international debut for Sri Lanka. Chaturanga de Silva, his elder brother, has also played for the national squad. Wanindu Hasaranga, drafted straight from Sri Lanka’s under-19s into the national team, is an aggressive middle order batsman who can also bowl leggies.

Wanindu Hasaranga began in the age divisions largely as a leg-spinner. Hasaranga made his List A debut in the AIA Premier Limited Over Tournament on November 30, 2015. He was nominated to Sri Lanka’s Under-19 Cricket World Cup squad in December 2015. On February 26, 2016, he made his first-class debut for Sri Lanka Ports Authority Cricket Club in the 2015–16 Premier League Tournament.
He made an impression at the 2016 Youth World Cup. Wanindu Hasaranga’s batting, on the other hand, quickly took over and outperformed his bowling as he racked up remarkable stats for Colombo Cricket Club in the two seasons of the Premier League event.
The national selectors were even more delighted when his form transferred into List A success. Wanindu Hasaranga was voted the most promising domestic cricketer for the 2016–17 season at Sri Lanka Cricket’s annual awards ceremony in November 2017. On 11 November 2017, he made his Twenty20 debut for Sylhet Sixers in the 2017–18 Bangladesh Premier League.
He extended his form into the 2018 season. Wanindu Hasaranga was picked to Colombo’s team for the 2017–18 Super Four Provincial Tournament as well as the Super Provincial One Day Tournament in 2018. He was Colombo Cricket Club’s highest run-scorer with 765 runs in nine Premier League matches.
Wanindu Hasaranga was picked to Galle’s squad for the 2019 Super Provincial One Day Tournament in March 2019. He was drafted by the Jaffna Stallions for the inaugural Lanka Premier League in October 2020. After capturing seventeen wickets, he was named tournament player of the tournament.
Hasaranga has been called up to Sri Lanka’s One Day International (ODI) team for the upcoming series against Zimbabwe. On July 2, 2017, he made his ODI debut for Sri Lanka against Zimbabwe. In his debut encounter, he claimed the final three Zimbabwe wickets in three successive deliveries, becoming the youngest bowler in ODI history to take a hat-trick on debut.
Wanindu Hasaranga was one of 33 cricketers handed a national contract by Sri Lanka Cricket ahead of the 2018–19 season in May 2018. He was picked to Sri Lanka’s Twenty20 International (T20I) team for their series against New Zealand in August 2019. On September 1, 2019, he made his T20I debut for Sri Lanka against New Zealand.
Hasaranga was named the only specialist spinner for the Pakistan series in Pakistan in September 2019. He took eight wickets in the T20I series against Pakistan, which Sri Lanka won. Sri Lanka won all three games and whitewashed Pakistan for the first time in their history. Sri Lanka went on to win the series 3–0 by winning the last T20I match by 13 runs. Hasaranga was named man of the match and player of the series in the third T20I due to his match-winning all-round performances.
Hasaranga was picked to Sri Lanka’s Test squad for the series against South Africa in December 2020. On December 26, 2020, he made his Test debut for Sri Lanka against South Africa. He grabbed four wickets for 171 runs in the contest. Hasaranga achieved his first Test fifty in the second innings.
Hasaranga scored his first ODI half-century on 14 March 2021, in the third ODI against the West Indies. In the contest, he and Ashen Bandara put on an unbroken 123-run seventh-wicket stand. Hasaranga attained a career-high second place in the ICC T20I rankings in July 2021 after numerous economical bowling stints in T20I series against England and India.
Hasaranga was picked to Sri Lanka’s team for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in September 2021. Hasaranga became the first Sri Lankan bowler to take a hat-trick in a T20 World Cup match on October 30, 2021, against South Africa. Wanindu Hasaranga was named to the ICC Men’s ODI Team of the Year and the ICC Men’s T20I Team of the Year in the annual ICC Awards in January 2022.
Wanindu Hasaranga was named to the Royal Challengers Bangalore roster for the second phase of the IPL 2021 in the UAE in August 2021. On September 20, 2021, he made his IPL debut against the Kolkata Knight Riders. Following the players’ draught for the 2021 Lanka Premier League, he was selected to play with the Jaffna Kings in November 2021. Hasaranga was purchased by the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the 2022 IPL Auction.
